Any idea why women apologise so much ?

Do you have any idea as to why women apologise so much? Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, found that women tend to apologise more compared to the opposite sex but it doesn’t mean that men are reluctant to admit wrongdoing.

It’s just that men have a higher threshold for what they think warrants reparation, the scientists said.When the researchers looked at the number of apologies relative to the number of offences the participants perceived they had committed, they saw no differences between the genders.“Men aren’t actively resisting apologising because they think it will make them appear weak or because they don’t want to take responsibility for their actions,” said study researcher Karina Schumann, a doctoral student in social.psychology at theuniversity.

“It seems to be that when they think they’ve done something wrong they do apologise just as frequently as when women think they’ve done something wrong. It’s just that they think they’ve done fewer things wrong,” Schumann was quoted as saying by LiveScience.The findings might have implications for how men and women communicate with each other, she said, adding that their study did not find any evidence to back the assumption that women are the more apologetic sex.

Schumann and her colleagues conducted two studies to see if genders do indeed differ in how often they apologise, and if so, why this might be.

In the first study, 33 university students in the age group of 18 to 44 years kept an online dairy for 12 days documenting whether they apologised or did something they thought required an apology, even if they didn’t actually say they were sorry.They also kept track of how often they felt someone had committed an offensive act against them that warranted an apology.

Women apologised more and reported committing more offensive acts, but both men and women apologised about 81 per cent of the time when they deemed their actions offensive.

Men were also less likely to report being victims of wrongdoing. This led the researchers to investigate whether men are just not offended as easily, and less likely to think they’ve done something objectionable.

In the second study, 120 undergraduates rated how severe they thought a particular offensive was. For instance, they had to imagine they woke their friend up late at night, and because of the sleep disturbance, the friend did poorly on an interview the next day.

Women rated the offences as more severe than men did, and women were also more likely to say the friend deserved an apology.The studies, published in the journal Psychological Science, were small and involved onlyuniversity students, so the findings might not be applicable to all men and women in general, the researchers said.Recognising that men and women may perceive situations differently may help the genders to get along, they said.





“Neither men nor women are wrong when they disagree about whether or not an offence has occurred or whether or not an apology is desired,” Schumann said. “

Bapu's tryst with Delhi

Gandhiji and Delhi had a very close relationship that started in 1915 when he came here for the first time. In his maiden visit to capital, Gandhi ji stayed at the residence of Sushil Kumar Rudra, the then Principal of St.Stephans College from April 13-15, 1915.

A photograph recording this visit of the Mahatma and Kasturba Gandhi currently hangs in the Principal`s office of college. During that trip, Bapu also visited the Gali Qasim Jaan house of Hakim Ajmal Khan and also visited Qutub Minar with him.

Bapu’s last 144 days were spent in the home of noted industrialist and his close friend GD Birla at 5 Albuquerque Road ( now 5,Tees January Marg ). It was here that he falls to the senseless bullets of Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

Birla house where Bapu was assassinated was acquired by the Government in 1971 and opened for the public on August 15, 1973. The museum in the building houses a number of articles associated with Gandhi`s life and death. Mahatma Gandhi had lived in this house from September 9,1947 to January 30,1948. Thus, the hallowed house treasures many memories of the last days of his epic life.

The room where Mahatma Gandhi lived and the prayer ground where he held a mass congregation every evening has not been changed at all. The building and the landscape have been preserved as they were in those days. Interestingly when Bapu was staying at Birla house, his son Devdas Gandhi, used to stay at Connaught Place. He was then the editor of Hindustan Times. At the Birla House, Abha and Manu, the two girlsMahatma Gandhi used to lean on while walking also stayed. Bapu used to call Abha and Manu his walking sticks. Abha also served as time-keeper for Gandhi six years till his death, looking at his pocket-watch all the time so that he kept his appointments on schedule.

An important job that because he was a stickler for punctuality. Almost all the top leaders of freedom movement ass well as commoners used to meet Bapu there. If you ever happen to visit Birla house despite your busy schedules, you would feel a serene and sacred atmosphere there. Somehow one gets the impression that he would emerge from somewhere. Presently there on display are photographs, sculptures, paintings, frescos, inscriptions on rocks and relics pertaining to the years Mahatma Gandhi spent here. The humble personal effects of Gandhiji too are carefully preserved.

A larger than life statue of Mahatma Gandhi, with a boy and a girl holding a dove in their hands standing on either side, emerging out of the globe, symbolizing his universal concern for the poor and the deprived, welcomes the visitor at the main entrance of the Birla house. It is the work of the renowned sculptor Ram Sutar.

A Martyr`s Column stands at the spot where the Father of the Nation was assassinated, commemorating the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi as the embodiment of all the sufferings and sacrifices that characterized the long struggle for India`s Freedom.

Actually, Mahatma Gandhi stayed for extended periods at three different places in Delhi-at Birla House, before that, at the Valmiki Mandir on Mandir Marg in Central Delhi, next to St. Thomas School and, much before that, at the Harijan Ashram at Kingsway Camp in North Delhi.

In Valmiki temple on Mandir Marg, Bapu chose to stay from April 1, 1946 to June 1,1947.

In hall, you can still see charkha, Bapu’s writing desk, adorned with fresh marigolds and a wooden pen holder.

And at Harijan Sewak Sangh, Gandhiji spent a total of 105 days here, between 1934 and 1938.A plaque on the main wall of building reads “Ba Kutir” because; Kasturba lived on the ground floor and Gandhi on the first.

There is a stone bathtub in the unkempt front yard, half buried in the ground. This bathtub was used by Gandhiji,” says an employee of the Harijan sewak samaj.

Delhi is ready for grand Commonwealth Games

Notwithstanding the negative predications from prophet of dooms, capital is all set for grand commonwealth game. All the stadiums are fully ready to host the events. It is expected to be the grandest ever sporting extravaganza. The whole capital is under the spell of games with everybody is talking about games. National capital has been blanketed by massive security with 17,000 paramilitary troopers reinforcing 80,000 police.

All Games facilities are surrounded by high walls and barbed wire fences, with manned watchtowers erected over strategic locations and closed-circuit television cameras monitoring public areas.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall arrived here in capital on Saturday to attend the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Prince Charles and India`s President Pratibha Patil will declare open the Games at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organising Committee, received the royal couple here. The Prince will spend time with athletes from a broad cross-section ofCommonwealth countries.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram visited games village in order to take stock of the security arrangements national and international athletes. In his brand new avtaar, Chidambaram was wearing t-shirt,trousers and sporting a cap. He also visited different recreationalfacilities such as cafeterias, massage parlour, bar and discotheques. Meanwhile,Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that we are sure the Games will be a huge success.

Indian tennis great and gold medal hope Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati along with their team mates have already entered the huge games village. Sania Mirza after staying at capital`s Meridian hotel for couple of days is also now staying in village. The medal hopes likes Abhinav Bindra,Vijendra Singh and Sushil Kumar are working hard in their practice sessions.

Experienced England badminton player Nathan Robertson said the athletes` accommodation in the Indian capital was up there with the best he has seen in fourCommonwealth Games."There were promises of five star facilities, its reasonably three star... and athletes are fine with that," said another foreign player.

Many Indian players said that they now wanted to put the controversies behind them and focus on doing their best at the Games. "We are looking forward to test ourselves against the best in the world. Who knows, we might cause an upset or two," said Indian hockey player Rajpal Singh.

Meanwhile, the athletes finally look satisfied and comfortable at the Village. It may be recalled that Indian tricolour was hoisted on Friday."When we came initially the conditions were not very good, but a lot of improvement has taken place, and if anything else happens I will definitely tell you about it," said Akhil Kumar, member of the Indian boxing team. Players from various countries are enjoying their stay here. They are interacting with players from other countries.

Endhiran is set to be India’s biggest blockbuster

Rajinikanth starrer Endhiran has finally arrived, with a bang. We all know how the advance booking for the first two weeks in Chennai went out within minutes of the ticket counter opening, how people queued up to watch 4am shows on the Friday of release, and how audiences have been going berserk in cinema halls at the antics of their favourite star.

What remains to be seen, however, is whether India’s most expensive film ever – at a budget in excess of Rs150 crores – will be able to earn back its investment and make profits. Early reports indicate that it most certain will accomplish the gargantuan feat.

Sun Pictures, the owners of the film, are reported to have already earned Rs210 crores, clearly making a profit. “In the case of South films, things work differently,” explains trade analyst Amod Mehra. “Sun Pictures, who hold the satellite rights themselves, has made a handsome profit on the film.”

Even if we look at the box office prospects of the film, it seems like Endhiran is set to be the biggest hit in the history of Indian cinema. “The films should earn a nett amount of Rs35-40 crores in only the south territories over the first weekend itself,” says Komal Nahta, editor of Film Information, adding that he’s only talking about the Tamil version.

“Then there are the Telugu versions, Hindi versions and the business that should come from the release of the Tamil version in other parts of India and overseas.”

The biggest Indian grosser of all time, 3 Idiots, earned a total nett amount of Rs202 crores from box office receipts. Endhiran seems set to break that record, mainly due to Rajinikanth’s appeal that goes beyond south India to many parts of the world, all of where the film has reportedly opened to packed houses. Screens in the US, Europe, Japan and Malaysia are all seeing unprecedented crowds for an Indian film, even Asian films.

“In places like Dubai, the fan frenzy is said to be unmatchable. Plus, in major south Indian cities, ticket prices have been hiked to unbelievable amounts – from Rs1500 to Rs3000 – in spite of which, shows in every cinema hall are House Full for the next 10 days,” says Nahta.

While the Telugu dubbed version of the film, Robo, has had a phenomenal opening as well, the Hindi dubbed version, Robot, has opened to average collections. “Having said that, the most a dubbed Hindi film earns is a little over a crore. Robot, the Hindi version, itself should do a business of over Rs10 crore. Now, that is saying something,” says Mehra.

It’s the magic of ‘Superstar Rajini’, after all.

'Anjaana Anjaani' going great at box office

Anjaana Anjaani box office update. Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra’s latest film Anjaana Anjaani has opened well at box office. As it’s the first major Hindi film to release in three weeks since Salman Khan’s Dabangg, movie buffs thronged the theatres to watch the love story directed by Siddharth Anand.

From the latest reports that we are getting, the film has opened to 75 percent to 100 percent occupancy at many multiplexes in urban centres like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. However, in southern centres like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, the film saw less enthusiastic response because of Rajinikanth’s latest film Endhiran The Robot which is pulling most of the crowd downsouth.

Anjaana Anjaani has got mixed reviews from critics, with some hailing it as a finely crafted romantic movie, while others thrashing it as a senseless mushy drama. With the Robot (dubbed Hindi version) collection also likely to pick up in northern belt because of good reviews, Anjaana Anjaani has some tough competition coming from the 60-year-old superstar Rajinikanth.

First look of Imran-Katrina's film out!

Yash Raj Films next project, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan starring Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar in lead roles has gone on floor.

The film is written and directed by debutant Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Aditya Chopra. Shooting started last week and the movie is scheduled for a
mid-2011 release.

Stefani calls her wax image 'weird'

American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and fashion designer Gwen Stefani was amused when her waxwork figure was unveiled at Las Vegas' Madame Tussauds Museum.

She spent several minutes prodding her likeness and giggling before telling reporters, "That is so weird." The singer's wax figure is said to have taken more than 500 hours to create. It may be recalled that Billboard magazine named Stefani thirty-seventh Hot 100 artist of the decade.

Stefani is the lead vocalist for the rock band No Doubt. Stefani recorded her first solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. in 2004. The album was primarily inspired by music of the 1980s, and emerged a success with sales of seven million.

The album's third single "Hollaback Girl" was the first US digital download to sell one million copies. Stefani's second solo album The Sweet Escape yielded "Wind It Up", "4 In The Morning" and the highest selling single "The Sweet Escape". Including her work with No Doubt, Stefani has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. She won the World's Best-Selling New Female Artist at the World Music Awards 2005.

In 2003, she debuted her clothing line L.A.M.B. and expanded her collection with the 2005 Harajuku Lovers line, drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and fashion.

Stefani performs and makes public appearances with four back-up dancers known as the Harajuku Girls dancers. She married British grunge musician Gavin Rossdale in 2002 and they have two sons: Kingston James McGregor Rossdale.

Julia Roberts not bothered about weight

Hollywood's popular actress Julia Robert says she has never been bothered about staying slim. She added that it is "sad and disinteresting" that people pay so much attention to the weight of others.

"I'm too old for that c**p. It's so silly, so pointless, and it's motivated by a culture that for some reason finds it entertaining to perpetuate the glorification of our youth. It's really sad and disinteresting. I mean, I know people really suffer and I just think, 'How can they perpetuate that'," contactmusic.com quoted Julia as saying.

"It's silly to consider it a personal triumph for myself that in almost 24 years in show business - except for being pregnant - I've weighed within about a five to 10lb range. That seems unusual, but I'm lucky I haven't suffered those things."

"I think it's important for us to start perpetuating the healthy, happy way of looking at it as opposed to supporting the negative ideal of what a girl should ideally look like," she said.

Lady Gaga signs deal with Armani

The hot and sexy pop singer Lady Gaga has signed a deal with Italian fashion house Giorgio Armani to create her costumes for her Monster Ball tour.



"A huge company like Giorgio Armani has the duty to always be alert to trends and what appeals to young people," digitalspy.co.uk quoted Roberta Armani, head of VIP relations at the label, as saying.



"It helped to see how the world is through Lady Gaga, the way she uses Facebook and Twitter," Armani told the Wall Street Journal.



It may be recalled that recently Lady Gaga sparked outrage by PETA for wearing an outfit made of raw meat to the MTV Video Music Awards. She wore a dress, boots, hat and purse made of animal flesh.



Giorgio Armani is an Italian fashion designer, particularly noted for his menswear. He is known today for his clean, tailored lines. He formed his company, Armani, in 1975, and by 2001 was acclaimed as the most successful designer to come out of Italy, with an annual turnover of $1.6 billion and a personal fortune of $5.3 billion.
