Gaga Britney Spears Accepts Video Vanguard VMA And A Kiss From Lady Gaga 2011

Britney Spears and Lady Gaga on stage at the 2011 VMAsAnd that's what happened when Lady Gaga stepped out on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to pay tribute to Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Well, kind of. Gaga took the stage to honor Spears still in character as her male
Matt Sayles / AP LOS ANGELES — Pop star Lady Gaga picked up two awards and Katy Perry won three, including video of the year. But it was Beyonce showing off her new baby bump that stole the show at MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday.
She's a breath of fresh air and she's so exciting and her music is adding another dimension to radio that's so important," Lady Gaga, who is opening the 2011 VMAs, told MTV News. "She's [also] a truly lovely person -- which, to me,

Gaga took the stage to honor Spears still in character as her male alter ego Jo Calderone, which she'd taken on for her show-opening performance earlier in the night. And that made things pretty interesting. Calderone opened by calling Spears an inspiration, saying, "She taught us all how to be fearless, and the industry wouldn't be the same without her."

Calderone then went on to get a little personal about Spears. He told the audience he used to put up posters of the pop star on his bedroom wall and be inspired in non-musical ways. It was a weird moment, but Calderone is a young guy of the right generation — a generation that would indeed have posters of Britney Spears on his/her wall.

There's a reason, after all, she was being awarded the Vanguard Award. The tribute then turned into exactly what any great tribute to this particular diva should be: a dance party. Spears is known as one of the biggest dance pop artists of her generation, and accordingly, dancers wearing Britney's most famous video looks took the stage to get down to her biggest hits, from "Baby One More Time" and "Crazy" to "Toxic" and "Do Somethin'."

By the time the sequence dissolved into a full-stage dance-off to Spears' recent smash "Till The World Ends," children also wearing Spears' myriad costumes popped up on stage alongside their grown-up dancing counterparts. It was a fitting way to show the impact Spears' music has had. From kids to adults, everyone knows and loves Britney. As the performance ended, Gaga-as-Calderone again grabbed the spotlight to introduce the pop star and did so with the kind of bravado that carried him through his monologue earlier in the show. "Everybody, stand the f--- up," Calderone demanded.

Looking better than ever and glowing from all the praise, Spears then took the stage.

Calderone certainly liked what he saw, eying the singer before stepping forward for a semi-awkward stare-down. But Gaga, er, Calderone eventually got what he wanted: a quick kiss from the one and only Britney Spears. He wanted more, however, but alas, it just wasn't going to happen. Being a classy guy, Calderone brushed off Britney's dismissal of his advances with a cool, "I don't want Gaga to get pissed

Polio Over 3.7 lakh migratory kids administered polio immunization drops 2011

The European Regional Certification Commission for Poliomyelitis Eradication (RCC) announced that Europe will retain its polio-free status after the importation of wild poliovirus type 1 in 2010. At their 25th meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark
The Polio Eradication Initiative in Pakistan received a massive blow this week when four infants in China s Xinjiang province were detected with poliovirus having generic links to the virus in Pakistan. The development has put Asia s largest country and the world s largest populated country in danger of losing its 11-year-old polio-free status.
CHANDIGARH: Around 3,73,719 migratory children below the age of 5 years were administered polio immunization drops on Sunday, the first day of the 3-day sub-national immunization campaign for Pulse Polio immunization held across Punjab.

No case of polio was reported during the year 2010, while, in 2009, 4 cases were reported from the state. While2 of these were reported from Ludhiana, one case each was from Jalandhar and Mohali. Doctors say that it required at least 3 years consecutively of there being no polio case before a region can be declared in the safe zone of polio eradication.

A total of 3,147 teams and 629 supervising teams have been formed by the government to achieve an overall target covering 7,86,777 migratory children in Punjab during the 3-day Pulse Polio campaign that will continue till August 30.

According to the Xinjiang Department of Health, the four children aged between four months to two years belong to the Hotan prefecture of the province. The cases were reported from July 3 to 17.
According to information available on the website of the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed importation of the virus from Pakistan. Gene sequencing has revealed that the virus has a 100 per cent resemblance with the wild poliovirus that caused the outbreak in Pakistan.

Terming the incident one of its kind, health experts placed the blame on field officials. Pakistan has reported a record 72 polio cases so far this year, that too when 2011 has been declared by the president and the prime minister as the Emergency Year for Polio Eradication. It seems that the Polio Emergency Year will go down in the history of Pakistan as the darkest year for polio eradication. The importation of the virus to China is yet another demonstration of the country s shameful performance in eradicating polio during the ongoing year, a health official remarked. Every year, the crafty scientists of the polio eradication initiative coin new technical excuses to conceal their failure. These excuses include inaccessibility, flash floods, fragile security, and poor sanitation, to name a few. This year, they are blaming Balochistan for the recent outbreak of the virus.

Another matter of concern is the increasing number of P1 polio cases, which are far more lethal than the P3 virus. Out of the 72 polio cases reported so far in Pakistan, 71 are P1 type cases, which clearly indicates that the poliovirus is on the loose, and that the coming days will be even darker for polio eradication.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been speculations of Pakistan heading in the direction of registering close to 300 cases during 2011. The country topped the list of the world s poorly-performing last year by reporting 144 polio cases. In contrast, India has reported only a single polio case so far this year and is currently seen as the best performing country in the list of polio endemic countries. Afghanistan and Nigeria have reported 13 and 25 polio cases respectively.

Times of India

Even as people keep speculating on whether cricketer Yuvraj Singh actually ran away from a fashion show recently after spotting his ex-girlfriend Kim Sharma at the same event, the cricketer seems to be in a joyous state of mind because he literally has a "little" thing to keep him happy.

The cricketing star seemed to be exuding the joy of having become an uncle to his sister Shehnaz's newly born son as he posted a picture with them on a microblogging site. Yuvraj wrote, "At my sisters house in noida finally shehnaz has become a mother how does my nephew look?" alongside a picture showing him and Shehnaz smiling at the shutterbug with the little baby in Shehnaz's hands. We surely are happy for you Yuvi. Good luck for your new role as an uncle!

Yuvraj Singh

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh has denied that he had run away after seeing his ex-girlfriend, actor Kim Sharma sitting in one of the lounges of the just-concluded fashion week in town.

The star tweeted and revealed to his close friends that he was surprised at how Sharma was present at the venue at the exact time when Yuvraj was supposed to be there at the fashion show.

“Did not run away, did not run out of the lounge! Saw the show and happily came back home!” tweeted Yuvraj.

According to sources, Yuvraj is apparently miffed with the organisers for not informing him about Kim’s presence in the lounge.

“He didn’t like that organisers didn’t inform him that he will get into such a sticky situation. He was inundated with calls. He is also wondering how Kim was there at the exact time when he was supposed to be there and how she could be totally in the dark about his presence. Everybody knew that Yuvraj will be coming in. He iswondering whether Kim deliberately did it,” says a source.

Nepal parliament elects Maoist prime minister 2011

Against the backdrop of violent protests in Kathmandu and outside, Nepal's former Maoist guerrillas returned to power Sunday, two years after the fall of their first government, with parliament electing India-educated leader Baburam Bhattarai as the restive republic's fourth prime minister in three years.

The 57-year-old scholar, who comes from a lower middle-class farmer's family in western Nepal's Gorkha district, and is described by acquaintances as having tended his father's cows and cut grass, showed his mettle during his very school days, topping the board exams, winning a prestigious international scholarship and going on to obtain a doctorate degree from New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Bhattarai, known as Laldhwoj - red flag - while living underground during the 10-year insurgency fought by his party, became Nepal's 35th prime minister after clinching a last-minute deal with the Madhesi morcha, a bloc of five ethnic parties whose 71 lawmakers held the key to Sunday's closely watched election.

After his candidacy was proposed in parliament Sunday by Maoist chief Prachanda and seconded by another deputy chief of the party, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Bhattarai defeated his lone rival, Ramchandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress party, by polling 340 votes. A total of 575 MPs were present during the poll.

Poudel, a former deputy prime minister who had been the Nepali Congress's candidate in the earlier 17 rounds of vote, received a shot in the arm Saturday night with the third largest party, the communists, announcing they would support him.

However, despite the 108 communist MPs behind him, Poudel faced an uphill task as his own party had only 114 lawmakers. Sunday's election saw him poll 235 votes.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, the only royalist party seeking the restoration of monarchy and a Hindu state, boycotted the vote, demanding a fresh election to choose a new parliament. So did the communist Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party, accusing "Indian expansionism" of influencing Nepal's prime ministerial elections.

The Maoists, who after fighting a 10-year war signed a peace accord in 2006 and won the election in 2008, are now offering to disband their guerrilla army within 45 days of forming the new government.

The existence of their People's Liberation Army (PLA) with its nearly 20,000 fighters even five years after the insurgency ended is regarded as the main obstacle to the peace process and led to the fall of the first Maoist government in 2009.

Bhattarai is regarded as the moderate face of the Maoists, whose chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda failed to return to power after backtracking on his promise to demobilise the PLA, return the properties captured by the rebels during the civil war, and end the culture of impunity that saw both the state and Maoists carry out torture and extra-judicial killings.

Nepal's parliament elected a Maoist leader as prime minister on Sunday after weeks of failure by lawmakers to form a national unity government that has threatened a fragile peace process in the nascent Himalayan republic.

The election of Baburam Bhattarai, a senior leader of the former rebels who waged an armed insurgency against the now-toppled monarchy, follows two years of turmoil in South Asia's poorest nation where Asian superpowers China and India jostle for influence.

Bhattarai faces the twin challenge of integrating and rehabilitating more than 19,000 former guerrillas and must oversee preparation of the first republican constitution, two major conditions of a 2006 peace deal which ended a decade-long civil war that killed 16,000 people.

'Completing the peace process and preparing the new consitution are my priorities. Number three is providing relief to the people,' Bhattarai said after his election, his faced smeared with vermilion and marigold garlands around his neck.

His appointment is seen easing a political impasse in Nepal, which has struggled through two years of stalemate since the former rebels quit the government in a conflict with the president over the control of the national army.

Nepal has potential to generate hydroelectric power and is courted by neighbours India and China as a geopolitical ally, but instability has spooked investers and distracted parliament in a country struggling with near-double digit inflation.

Bhattarai, whose United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has 236 lawmakers in the 601-seat parliament, defeated Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress by 340 votes to 235, after clinching a power-sharing deal with several regional parties.

The 57-year-old India-educated Maoist ideologue, whose party has expoused a largely reformist and social democractic agenda, replaces Jhalanath Khanal, a moderate communist who resigned two weeks ago after six months in office having failed to advance the tortuous peace process.

His election raises hopes for a revival of the edgy peace process and could settle the future of Maoist combatants, which the Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG) says is crucial to reducing two standing armies to one

Manchester United vs Arsenal Kids Let’s make it happen 2011

Today is a massive game, a game if we win would be absolutely amazing – but a win is looking unlikely, simply because of the great degree of personnel unavailable… Not to be negative, but away at Old Trafford with our best team ever is hard, so with the likes of Miquel, Jenkinson and Coquelin all brought into the first team squad, we’re obviously very young…

As a quick reminder, Alex Song, Emmanuel Frimpong and Gervinho are all suspended for this game, whilst at least one centre back, most likely Vermaelen will also miss the game, and perhaps another in Djourou too

Howard Webb

It’s Howard Webb again… you remember him; he’s the one that made a bit of a tit of himself in the World Cup final… not that anyone really cares about the world cup anymore – they should rename it to the ‘Coca Cola Cup’ I reckon – more apt init and they would coin it in on the naming rights.

So let’s refocus our lens on Webby and come a little closer to home and, before we crunch the numbers and scrape the stat barrel, look at the games he’s had between Arsenal and Manchester United in the EPL in the extra wee table I’ve knocked up for you:

Home

Away Date HT Fouls AT Fouls HT Yel AT Yel HT Red AT Red
Manchester United 1 0 Arsenal 13/12/2010 (20:00) 7 16 0 4 0 0
Arsenal 2 1 Manchester United 08/11/2008 (12:45) 16 7 3 2 0 0
Manchester United 2 1 Arsenal 13/04/2008 (16:00) 12 7 2 6 0 0
Arsenal 2 2 Manchester United 03/11/2007 (12:45) 15 15 1 2 0 0

Cor, look at that on the 13/04/2008 – we made 7 fouls and got 6 yellow cards and a fine for ‘failing to control our players’ (i.e. we should have just laid down and ‘crumbled’ with ‘fragility’ when faced with the mighty red devils – due to a lack of ‘English spine’ just like the EPL script said)… they [Manchester United] made 12 ‘official’ fouls that day but memory seems to serve that they kicked the living shit out of us.

Any more happy memories of Mr. Webb from these matches, then please feel free to document them in the comments below; personally, for me – it’s quite difficult not to spin off into a filthy torrent of abuse, aspersion casting and foul language. No reds though… yet – but a penalty for Manchester United in every match.

Let’s check out his stats!

Howard Webb Vs. Manchester United (EPL)

Howard Webb has had 26 games for Manchester United consisting of 17 wins, 3 draws and 6 losses.

Manchester United are currently in 1st in Howard Webb’s personal Points Per Game League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, with an average of 2.08 PPG.

In Howard Webb’s personal Handicap Swing League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, Manchester United come 8th with an average positive swing of 0.25.

Manchester United are currently in 18th in Howard Webb’s personal Booking’s Per Match League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, with an overall average of 2.04 BPM.

In Howard Webb’s personal Fouls Per Booking League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, Manchester United come 20th with an overall average of 5.77 FPB.

What strikes me here is the number of games Howard Webb gets for Manchester United – if the referees were randomised against matches then this seems statistically unlikely – also statistically unlikely is the number of games Howard Webb has refereed between Arsenal and Manchester United. Do we believe in coincidences?

Also we can see that his swing against the handicap looks about right at 0.25, we should think about that in terms of his overall [seasons] PPG figures in which the Mancs come a clear first and their nearest rivals (in the EPL) being Liverpool with an overall average of 1.64.

So we see – that Manchester United seem about right from Howard Webb’s figures (given they are a good side) but, coincidentally, the other ‘good sides’ (i.e. Manchester United’s competition) doing rather less well in terms of both their performance against the handicap and their PPG figures.

Howard Webb Vs. Arsenal (EPL)

Howard Webb has had 21 games for Arsenal consisting of 8 wins, 8 draws and 5 losses.

Arsenal are currently in 10th in Howard Webb’s personal Points Per Game League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, with an average of 1.52 PPG.

In Howard Webb’s personal Handicap Swing League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, Arsenal come 15th with an average negative swing of -0.09.

Arsenal are currently in 21st in Howard Webb’s personal Booking’s Per Match League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, with an overall average of 2.38 BPM.

In Howard Webb’s personal Fouls Per Booking League (for teams with a minimum of 5 matches played), for matches in the English Premier, Arsenal come 22nd with an overall average of 5.44 FPB.

The main thing that grabs my attention from the chart is the FPB figures in which Howard Webb seems to consistently punish Arsenal quite harshly in the challenge against their competition – this evens out in 2009/2010… but it’s then resumed to the trend immediately following the FIFA World Cup. This is what I call the Howard Webb ‘Pinch’ in that Webby’s stats, in the season immediately preceding him being picked as FIFA’s top enforcer of policy, his statistics seemed to almost find a perfect ‘normality’ before pinging back on track the following season.

This would suggest to me that Howard Webb is a referee who is aware of his statistics and is very careful in how he is perceived in terms of the ‘trail of evidence’ he leaves behind him; those years in the police force have paid off it seems?

The figures for Manchester United (above) also seem to point to this; that is if we take into account the anecdotal evidence of a nation of football fans who will swear blind that Howard Webb is a Manc through and through.

Let’s move on now to check out how Howard Webb performs against selected teams in the EPL:

Howard Webb Vs. EPL (AHS)

Ahh – and there we see it again, the Howard Webb ‘Pinch’, and this time it’s in the AHS!

What strikes me here is the steady decline of Chelsea in conjunction with the meteoric rise of Manchester City. Arsenal and Liverpool both spiked against the trend in the 2006/2007 season and Arsenal have shown a steady climb out of the gutter. Manchester United looks to perform pretty normally against the handicap.

Hurricane Irene update Major transportation systems shut down 2011

photo

NEW YORK: Heavy winds and rains began smashing New York and New Jersey as Hurricane Irene, just over 200 miles from here, closed in resulting in widespread power outages and raising fears of heavy flooding by early Sunday.

City officials warned that flooding at high tide at around 8 am Sunday (US time) could that massive problems.

"That is when you will see the water come over the side," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a news conference.

More than 10,000 people in the New York area had lost electricity by late night, another 5,576 on Long Island, according to the Long Island Power Authority, 4,700 in New Jersey, according to Public Service Electric and Gas and about 400 in the city and in Westchester, according to Consolidated Edison.

"Now the edge of the hurricane is finally upon us," Bloomberg said. "We have warned the public and now we have to deal with Mother Nature."

Tornado warnings were also issued for some areas near the Delaware coast.

In New Jersey, a twister touched down in the south central part of the state, according to emergency management officials. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings Saturday night for several New Jersey counties.

As hundreds of thousands of residents were evacuated, city officials said the over 90 emergency centers, with a capacity to take in 70,000 people, had remained mostly empty.

They said only 5,500 had arrived by early evening. For a bustling city that never sleeps, New York's roads wore a deserted look with just handful of cars plying.

Mandatory evacuations covered all of the state's barrier island beach resorts, including such well-known and popular spots as Atlantic City, Cape May and Long Beach Island.

Irene was expected to hit the state with at least 75 miles per hour winds and 6 to 12 inches of rain starting on Saturday night.

"Over one million people have left the Jersey shore in the past 24 hours," Governor Chris Christie said at a news conference. "The best way to preserve human life on the Jersey shore is for there to be no human beings on the Jersey shore."

At an American Red Cross shelter in Toms River, about eight miles west of the barrier island town of Seaside Heights, 375 people were preparing to sleep on cots in a high school auditorium, including European students hired for summer jobs.

"We came to the shelter because we wanted to come," said Emiliya Ileva, 22, a Bulgarian student who has been working on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights since May.

"It's the same for me I don't have a place to stay so I just came here," said Stoyanka Simeonova, 24. Both women are from the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.

Christie said that in Atlantic County, one of three counties evacuated, 90 percent of residents and visitors had left, but a few elderly people were staying put.

The looming storm was bringing the biggest waves of the season in New Jersey, prompting scores of surfers to flock to beaches despite the rain.

"It's the waves," said Guy Gallo of Little Silver, N.J., as he prepared to paddle out into the Atlantic Ocean earlier in the day. "But you don't want to get caught out when the hurricane hits."

At a doughnut shop in Sea Bright, a sign advertising its closing hours read: "Friday 10 p.m., Saturday noon, Sunday, Good Luck."

In Sea Bright, stores were boarded up, a sight that locals said they could not recall ever seeing.

"A lot of people are taking this a lot more seriously," said the borough's emergency management coordinator, Patrick Mason Jr.

A long, narrow barrier beach, Sea Bright is at risk of flooding from the Atlantic Ocean on one side and from the Shrewsbury River on its inland side, he said.

Casinos and hotels in Atlantic City were emptied out on orders of the governor. A state of emergency has been in effect in New Jersey since Thursday.

A southbound stretch of nearly 100 miles of the Garden State Parkway south of the Raritan River was closed, as was the Atlantic City Expressway, which heads to Philadelphia.

A spokeswoman for Cape May County, also under evacuation orders, said only about 10,000 people, out of about 800,000 people who live or were visiting, remained.

She said that according to Atlantic City Electric, some 8,000 customers in Cape May County were without power Saturday eveni
