Before there was the World Wide Web, the Internet, hypertext markup, or even a digital computer, there was Jorge Luis Borges’ idea of “forking paths.” The Argentinean writer who envisioned “a massive branching structure as a better way to organize data and to represent human experience,” was born 112 years ago today and is the subject of a special Doodle on today’s Google home page.

The Web & The Library

“The Garden of Forking Paths” is a 1941 short story penned by Borges that many view as the basis for what we know today as our digital world of hyperlinks and the World Wide Web – yes, even for the universe, but we won’t go that far here. Replace “book” with “web” in Borges’ story and you may as well be discussing a gigantic story (in the online world that mirrors ours) that can be read multiple ways in non-linear fashion, with an endless series of consequences (or destinations).

What is the web if not an always expanding invisible labyrinth that folds back on itself or an infinite maze or book, showing an “incomplete yet false” picture, as Borges wrote. Visiting a website may start you on one path, but you can easily click on one link to another website, which leads you to a link to another website, and an ever-increasing piece of the gigantic hyperlinked puzzle that is the Web library.

A doodle inspired by the writings of Jorge Luis Borges honours the Argentine author on his 112th birthday. Born on August 24, 1899 in Buenos Aires the poet, essayist and short-story writer had command over a number of languages, though Spanish was the language of his literature.

Born to a respected Argentine family, Borges interest in literature was triggered by the books in his father’s library. In 1914 Borges moved to Switzerland with his family, where he learned French and German and also received his bachelor’s degree. While in Europe, Borges also spent a year in Spain, where he joined the Ultraist movement of avant-garde poets.

Upon his return to Argentina in 1921 he established the Ultraist movement in South America. Borges’ first published work was a volume of poems titled Fervor de Buenos Aires, poemas

In Borges’ “The Library of Babel,” a library is filled with endless amounts of information (and the source of the famous quote, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library”) but lacks any kind of organization, making the vast knowledge essentially worthless. This isn’t unlike the World Wide Web in its infancy and prior to Google’s emergence in the late 1990s.

Google’s mission, don’t forget, is to organize the world‘s information and make it universally accessible and useful – to bring order to the chaos with its system of ranking and retrieving search results.

Adding to this nightmare scenario in “Babel”: this library contains every book, whether it contains inaccuracies, predictions, biographies, or translations. Compare this to today’s Web, where nearly anybody can creat

Not much happening over there, in fact it is kind of going in a bounce back after performing some base at 260-270 odd level but upside will be capped. The 200 day average is at about 300, that is going to act as some kind of supply level. So I would probably not look at with much interest on these stocks, particularly now because given the fact that the market has broken down and the midcap stocks have also started to correct, the hope of activity building up over here or volumes going up is also not there for the next few days.

Samsung smart TV now in market Google Is Plotting to Take Over Your TV 2011

googletv.jpg

1. The Motorola Purchase: Bloggers have written extensively about all the patents Google is getting in buying Motorola Mobile. Less noticed is Motorola's set-top box business, one of the two top producers in the U.S. market (the other is a division of Cisco). If Google doesn't sell the set-top box division (as some have speculated they will), these boxes could be the leverage Google needs to get cable companies to cooperate with a product that combines broadcast TV, Internet streaming, on-demand content, and social networking (something akin to Pandora's feature of sharing customized channels).

As TV makers rush to produce “smarter” television sets, able to draw entertainment content directly from the Internet, the Ottawa firm is providing a specialized web browser that can be built into a TV set and programmed to provide weather updates, YouTube videos or other video-on-demand services.

“We give them the ability to turn their TVs into smart TVs and enable them to connect to Internet video,” said Jaison Dolvane, president and chief executive of Espial. “We’ve been doing browsers around TVs for more than 10 years. There is a lot of intellectual property (that we have) around how to make this stuff look good, feel good and be used on a television.”

Espial, which has spent the past decade providing hotels and other corporate clients with video-on-demand services, received a huge boost for its TV software earlier this year when Internet search giant Google Inc. hastily pulled its Google TV offering after early reviews panned the product. Google TV, which many manufacturers were set to publicly reveal at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, aimed to merge the worlds of television and the Internet.

Google TV was meant to do to televisions what Google’s Android did for cellular phones — offer an easy operating system manufacturers could use to make their devices Internet-capable.

With Google TV, users would be able to view new videos on YouTube and then flip to Global TV to watch House.

While the service worked, early reviews about its interface and ease of use were not kind. Google quickly withdrew the offering, leaving TV makers with little to show at the world’s largest consumer electronics show earlier this year. It’s rumoured the company’s recent acquisition of Motorola, which was a leader in the world of TV set top box design, may help to revive the service.

However, Google’s efforts shone a bright spotlight on a growing need in the marketplace. Consumers want more than what traditional cable and satellite companies offer. They want video on-demand, Internet-based podcasts, instant news feeds and access to items stored on their home network — and they want all of that on their TV. Numerous companies, including Apple Inc. and LG, are jumping into the space, trying to provide the link between traditional TV and the Internet.

Espial, which has been serving up on-demand content for over a decade, saw the market opportunity as a chance to expand on its area of expertise. The company had been working on a browser for televisions using open source technology called WebKit, the same technology Apple and Google used for their Safari and Chrome browsers respectively. Espial’s browser allows TVs to play Adobe Systems Inc. Flash videos, connect directly to YouTube and access photos and videos stored online. As well, users can install a number of “apps” to get information about the weather, or sports scores.

2. Google's Rumored Interest in Hulu: A purchase of Hulu, the on-demand TV-show and movie streaming site, would represent a bid to work more closely with networks and other content creators, as The Atlantic Wire reported yesterday. Bids are due tomorrow.

3. Google TV's New Compatibility with Android Apps: Google announced yesterday that developers could begin building Android apps for TV. Since most apps for phones rely on the touch-screen user interface -- something TVs don't have -- developers will be starting mostly from scratch on imagining the possibilities of the TV-Android combination.

It's not clear how -- or whether -- these different gambits fit together. But it makes sense that Google has its sights set on your TV. Americans spend an average of 2.7 hours per day watching TV. That's about as much time as they spend on all other leisure activities combined.

Additionally, TV advertising does not have nearly the precision (and therefor lacks the efficiency) of Google's targeted ads. There is a lot of money to be made if Google could apply its advertising strategy to the many ads people view on TV.

Google may be ready for TV but it remains to be seen whether TV is ready for Google. Google TV hasn't fared well and cable companies are said to be wary of Google's entrance into their turf. And despite people's complaints that there's never anything good to watch on TV, the hours they spend watching it anyway tell it a different story.

In the end, Google may not rule our TVs the way it rules our Internet experience. And that makes sense: TV is a far less open field than the Internet was when Larry Page and Sergey Brin began tinkering with a search algorithm in 1996. Perhaps none of Google's forays into TV will pan out, but Google has a lot to gain if even just a few do.

COIMBATORE: Any probe into the selection of vice-chancellors in Tamil Nadu and large-scale admission of unqualified students into the premier Anna University during the past five years must cover the role of power brokers in the Raj Bhavan, unscrupulous IAS officers and political lobbyists, say senior academicians. On Monday, Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan had announced in the Assembly that the administrative actions of his predecessor K Ponmudy would be probed after obtaining permission from Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The Minister had mentioned that the probe would cover alleged irregularities in the appointment of vice-chancellors, admission of low-scoring students into Anna University and the mysterious case of a student of an engineering college run by the family members of former Food Minister E V Velu passing without attending classes. Express was the first to highlight all these irregularities in its issues dated March 5 and 6, May 4 and May 17. Independent academicians, known for their integrity, say that the government’s probe must not be confined to punishing individuals, but expanded to nail a host of persons who had interfered with higher education without any compunction during the DMK regime. “A man claiming proximity to the Governor-Chancellor’s family, a senior IAS officer and political lobbyists were also involved in these irregularities. Some persons even paid bribes to become members of vice-chancellor’s search committees and, in turn, took money from aspirants to shortlist their names,” a widely-respected academician said.It is learnt that money paid by such vice-chancellors was not a one-time affair. “It was ensured that there was regular flow back of money from the vice-chancellors. It was so scandalous that affiliations were not granted to colleges/courses unless money was paid. Even for appointing lecturers, huge sums were demanded as a result of which incompetent teachers entered the portals of universities,” a source said. In some instances, power brokers allegedly forced the then government to work out a quid pro quo arrangement with Raj Bhavan to appoint vice-chancellors of their choice by rotation. “Members of a search committee were once coerced to include in the shortlist the name of an incompetent academician, who kept missing the vice-chancellor’s post each time, despite paying money. It was conveyed that unless this person was included in the shortlist for an arts and science university, the appointment of vice-chancellor for a technological university would not be cleared,” a privileged source said. Academics said that the government must investigate how many students were admitted to the Anna University on the recommendation of the Governor-Chancellor and by the then chief minister and higher education minister and the basis for such illegal admissions.

Atal bihari vajpayee Former telecom secy drags Vajpayee into 2G mess Probe sought into road construction work 2011

The name of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was today dragged into the 2G Spectrum allocation scam as a former Telecom Secretary during the NDA regime told the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) that the BJP statesman was holding the charge

The caretaker NDA government took major policy decisions in 1999 including implementation of the migration package for telecom operators despite the then cabinet secretary asking departments not to do so, JPC chairman PC Chacko said on Tuesday.

Anil Kumar, the telecom secretary between August, 1998 and February, 2000, appeared before the JPC for the third time on Tuesday and said the decisions were taken after "due deliberations."

When the committee members drew his attention to a letter written by then President KR Narayanan to then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in which the former said he was "not persuaded" that New Telecom Policy-1999 and the Migration package qualified to be "absolutely necessary" as it had significant financial implications, Kumar said the communication was not brought to his notice.

Chacko told reporters the then Cabinet Secretary had written to all secretaries they should not take major policy decisions or implement decision with significant financial implications as the government was caretaker.

But Kumar justified the decisions and said it was taken after "due deliberations."

"There were wide consultations, including financial institutions, service providers and stakeholder before a decision was taken for the implementation of the migration package," Chacko quoted Kumar as saying.

Kumar said without addressing the problems being faced by the existing service providers, NTP-99 would not have been successful and the telecom sector would not have come out of the "web of litigation."

He said the NTP-99 helped in the growth of subscriber base and increased tele-density

Judging by even our modest standards, governance at the top has taken a nosedive during the United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) rule. Some of this can perhaps be blamed on the specific actors involved. But there is a deeper structural explanation for it: the vesting of true power to govern outside the government, in the Congress high command. UPA rule has been the longest in our history that this phenomenon has played out. In all previous such episodes, either the executive successfully wrested power back from the external authority or it fell.

Thus, the first time the organisational wing of the Congress seized effective power was immediately following the death of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Known as the Syndicate, the organisational wing successfully kept the heavyweight Morarji Desai at bay and installed the more amicable Lal Bahadur Shastri as prime minister. But once the victory in the 1965 India-Pakistan war had turned him into a natio-nal hero, Shastri began to assert his independence. The battle between him and the Syndicate was already brewing when he unexpectedly died in January 1966.

Following Shastri, the Syndicate once again opted for the lightweight Indira Gandhi in preference to Desai. For almost four years, while the Syndicate and Indira remained locked in an unannounced battle for authority, policymaking suffered. In the end, soon after the July 1969 All India Congress Committee session, Indira broke loose of the "bosses" and went on to launch an era of true hyperactivity in both domestic and foreign policy arenas.

The country witnessed seve-ral episodes of outside entities exercising effective power in the decade from 1989 to 1998. In each case, the executive tried to assert its authority and lost power. Thus, Prime Minister V P Singh, who came to the helm in 1989, was dependent on the Bharatiya Janata Party for his survival. When he asserted his authority on the Mandal-Ayodhya issues, the BJP pulled the rug from under his feet. Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar succeeded Singh and suffered the same fate at the hands of the Congress. Subsequently, from 1996 to 1998, the governments of H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral fell victim to the same phenomenon.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who succeeded Gujral, broke the trend. Early in his tenure, the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) tried to restrain him from pursuing a reformist agenda. As a seasoned politician, Vajpayee knew that being the only moderate BJP leader accep-table to all coalition partners, he was in a unique position. Therefore, he offered to resign. The SJM quickly folded and Vajpayee went on to implement major reforms leading to the growth acceleration we currently enjoy.

The experience under the UPA has been altogether different. With the power centre residing outside, it has managed to survive a full seven years. Sonia Gandhi's decision to place a technocrat and former bureaucrat has proved masterly: lacking both a power base and political ambition, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has worked amicably with her while she retains the ultimate power.

But this has not been without cost. At her National Advisory Council (NAC), Sonia has been an easy target of NGO capture. While with their "on-the-ground" knowledge, these latter can be very effective at bringing to notice issues of importance, drafting legislative Bills is neither their mandate nor their expertise. Yet, that is what they now do at the NAC. For her part, Sonia is at ease with the quick fixes for the poor they propose, often invol-ving ever-rising expenditures.

But this is a slippery slope. On the one hand, the taste of drafting the country's laws has whetted civil society's appetite leading it to ask for more and more, culminating recently in something even Sonia cannot deliver: a Lokpal with the autho-rity to investigate all including her! On the other hand, the government has lost the moral authority to question the legitimacy of the NGOs to write legislation. Thus, when the prime minister accused Anna Hazare of shortchanging the parliamentary process by drafting the Jan Lokpal Bill, opposition leader Arun Jaitley was quick to point out that the NAC, which wrote Bills for the government, too had civil society activists in it.

But the greatest harm from this power structure has come from the prime minister losing the authority to govern while remaining answerable for the lapses of his government as well as the party. Because the Cong-ress high command cuts the deals with coalition partners and effectively makes decisions on cabinet appointments, it remains the object of the latter's loyalty. As a result, we have seen ministers getting away without reprimand even after criticising government policies in a foreign country. And since fund-raising for the party too is done at the behest of the high command, ministers often bypass the prime minister on major decisions, further weakening the institution.

Ironically, when scandals break out or civil society groups begin clamouring for more than what the government can deliver, it is the prime minister rather than the Congress high command that must answer! While the prime minister struggles, few have asked where the Cong-ress high command stands on the Lokpal issue. What the endgame of this agitation is going to be is anybody's guess.

prime minister of india India’s leader urges Anna Hazare to end hunger strike Prime Minister writes to Shri Anna Hazare 2011

India's anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare on the eighth day of his hunger strike in New Delhi, India, Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011. By Rama Lakshmi, NEW DELHI — On the eighth day of anti-corruption demonstrations, the Indian prime minister

NEW DELHI — On the eighth day of anti-corruption demonstrations, the Indian prime minister urged an activist to end his hunger strike and offered to request a parliamentary panel to discuss stronger legislation against graft.

In his first overture to Anna Hazare, the leader of the nationwide uprising against corruption, Manmohan Singh wrote in a letter that they shared the same goal but differed in their methods. Both wanted to “reduce significantly, if not eliminate, the scourge of corruption,” Singh wrote.

The letter was hand-delivered to Hazare, who is fasting in a large park in New Delhi. The park has become the epicenter of the expression of public rage at rising corruption.

After a series of backroom meetings Tuesday, Singh appointed Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as the chief negotiator with Hazare’s aides.

After the first round of talks with Mukherjee, activists said that the discussions were inconclusive and that more meetings will be held Wednesday.

“Unless there is a written commitment or a direct commitment from someone in the government, Anna is not going to relent. I wish we had started these talks two or three days ago,” said Kiran Bedi, an associate of Hazare.

Singh’s government introduced a bill in Parliament this month to establish an independent anti-corruption ombudsman. But Hazare called the legislation “good for nothing,” because it denies the ombudsman the power to act against the prime minister, the judiciary and much of the bureaucracy. The protesters have demanded that the government introduce their version of such a bill, which gives sweeping powers to the ombudsman.

Hazare and his aides had set a deadline of Aug. 30 for the government to introduce their bill. In his letter, however, Singh emphasized “parliamentary supremacy and constitutional obligations in matters of legislation,” indicating that legislative procedures cannot be bypassed. But he offered to refer Hazare’s bill to the parliamentary panel examining the issue and assured that the process can be fast-tracked.

The campaign against graft snowballed into a massive movement after a string of big-ticket corruption scandals came to light since October. The ombudsman legislation has been pending for 42 years and has been introduced in Parliament several times but has never been passed.

“The ice has been broken. Deadlock has been broken. Talks have begun. We are all concerned about Anna’s health,” said spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who heads the Art of Living Foundation and supports the anti-corruption campaign.

Singh expressed “deep and abiding concern” for Hazare’s health, as alarm grew Tuesday after his aides said the activist had lost more than 12 pounds since beginning the hunger strike.

Doctors have advised that Hazare be hospitalized or be administered a glucose drip. But he refused both and appealed to the protesters to prevent the government from taking him to the hospital by force.

“Today is the eighth day, but there is nothing to worry. I have lost 5.5 kilograms, but there is no other difficulty,” a tired-looking Hazare said in his morning speech to thousands of cheering protesters. “I will consider myself fortunate if I lose my life in the service of the nation.”

The Prime Minister has written to Shri Anna Hazare on the Lokpal issue. The text of the letter is as follows:

Over the last few days, I have watched with increasing concern the state of your health. Despite the differences between the Government and your team, I do not think that anybody is or should be in any doubt about the deep and abiding concern which I and our Government share about your health, arising from your continuing fast. I have no hesitation in saying that we need your views and actions in the service of the nation, from a robust physical condition and not in the context of frail or failing health.

I have maintained that your and our object is identical viz. to reduce significantly, if not eliminate, the scourge of corruption from this country. At worst, our paths and methodologies may differ, though I do believe that even those differences have been exaggerated. The Government is committed to passing a constitutionally valid and the best possible Lok Pal legislation with inputs from Civil Society with the broadest possible consensus. We are ready to talk to anybody. However, we will have to keep in mind Parliamentary supremacy and constitutional obligations in matters of legislation. As a Government we respect and are responsible to the Will of the Indian People as represented by Parliament.

As you are aware, the Lok Pal bill is now before a Standing Committee of Parliament. I have made it clear earlier and would like to restate that all options are open before the Standing Committee. Undoubtedly, they would be entitled to consider, in detail and clause by clause, subject to their discretion, not only the Bill introduced by us but the Jan Lokpal Bill and other versions like those prepared by Ms. Aruna Roy. Equally, I do maintain that they are fully entitled to make any changes to the Bill introduced by the Govt. and referred to them. In that view of the matter, the formal non introduction of the Jan Lokpal Bill version by the government is irrelevant and would largely boil down to a semantic debate.

Nevertheless, in view of the concern repeatedly expressed by your team that the Jan Lokpal Bill version should be before Parliament, but more particularly and more importantly, in view of my deep and abiding concern for your health, our government is prepared to request the Speaker, Lok Sabha to formally refer the Jan Lokpal Bill also to the Standing Committee for their holistic consideration along with everything else. Furthermore, if you have any anxieties about time and speed, the Government can formally request the Standing Committee to try, subject to its discretion and the necessity to reflect deeply and spend adequate time on an important Bill, and fast track their deliberations to the extent reasonably feasible.

I would like to say that this letter and each suggestion herein is actuated solely by the twin considerations of deep and genuine concern about your health and the emergence of a strong and effective Lok Pal Act in accordance with established constitutional precept and practice.

As far as the eye can see, the streets are lined with rows of tricolored flags. They’re fluttering in whatever monsoon winds are left. A group of women students from New Delhi walk with construction workers from Bihar. Their voices rise in curious unison: "Long live the revolution".

The "India" of the elite, and the "Bharat" of the masses, seamlessly coming together in one eclectic moment.

It’s almost a carnivalesque atmosphere at Delhi's Ramlila grounds. One could be forgiven for thinking this is another one of India’s colourful festivals. But this time, the young, the old, men, women and even children are speaking in one voice, all for one 74-year-old man. And all against corruption. A bit much you'd think?

The Anna phenomenon

Not so for these Indians. Two words. Anna Hazare. It’s become a synonym for everything that's gone wrong with India - and everything that people now want to do to make it right. Hazare is a social activist who, at the time of this writing, is on his 6th day of a hunger strike, fighting for a strong anti-corruption law for Indians.

And his support is enormous. It seems this is no longer the India filled with an apathetic middle class. The India that sits by the sidelines and watches its corrupt leaders make money off its own people. It’s the beginning of something new, yet strangely nostalgic of a yesteryear struggle for freedom.

"From making an identity card to getting a drivers license, I've got to pay bribes to get my work done. This isn't the India I signed up for,” says Rajiv, who carries a miniature snail on his head, symbolic of the government’s pace to tackle corruption.

In another corner, a young student holds up a poster. It stars (surprise, surprise) superhero Anna Hazare fighting the evils of a corrupt India, freeing the country from all its shackles.

File 43401

Why are they there?

But as the romanticism dies down, a deeper question arises. How many people actually know why they’re here? I ask nearly a dozen people at Ramlila whether they know about the Hazare version of the Lokpal (Ombudsman) bill, called the Janlokpal (peoples ombudsman). Whether they understand that only nine or 11 people will make up a committee to look after not just the prime minister’s deeds but also corrupt local officials at the village level. I have to admit, much to my own chagrin, more than half have no idea.

Yet, all these people have real convictions on corruption. Ravi travelled for two days to reach Delhi from his home district of Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. It’s a state notorious for the levels of corruption of its public servants. He tells me he's here to have "darshan" (pay homage) of Anna Hazare, a privilege usually afforded for gods and goddesses. He’s fed up of having to pay off the policeman, the local bureaucrat and even the local district collector for his identity papers.

Such is the frustration of ordinary Indians at their system that any person who embodies a larger fight beyond the individual is instantly embraced with both arms.

While Anna's methods at rallying up public support are noteworthy, almost revolutionary as some would say, his means to achieve a strong anti corruption law are being questioned.

"Its undemocratic. You can't force one person's vision for a law that needs serious discussion in parliament,” says Aruna Roy, one of the architects of the revolutionary right to information act in the country. Activists say they fear a centralisation of Anna’s power. He’s demanding the government pass a law by August 30. He’s also demanding that one ombudsman committee looks after corruption at the highest and the lowest levels. Something that is not just unreasonable but impossible to achieve in this country.

On the ground though, it’s a different sentiment. I’ve been covering Anna’s movement since he began his first fast in favour of a strong anti-corruption law in April this year. Since then, the movement and the feelings have grown stronger. But I also realize there’s a bigger danger of ignorance. More people need to know about the Janlokpal bill - what its provisions are and how will it exactly tackle corruption.

Anna Hazare and his camp have united the country like never before. Their challenge will be to give this nation’s people, an anti-corruption law they think they’re fighting for

A real live hero lives in Albuquerque. This hero witnessed something bad happening to a young child and only had seconds to save the child. He did not hesitate to put himself in mortal danger in her rescue.

At the time this happened, there was no way for him to know if he was going to be killed trying to save this child, but he selflessly threw caution to the wind and did a really fine thing that people will remember all of his life.

Like others, I want to say that Antonio Diaz Chacon is a fine human being and an exceptional credit to his country, Mexico. And therein is the problem. Diaz Chacon is not in the United States with legal status even though he is married to an American and has a job as a mechanic. He did not follow our laws of immigration when he came to our country illegally several years ago.

Again, in this case I am ever so happy he came here, and he did the right thing in saving the young child from a kidnapper.

Diaz Chacon probably had some trepidation about his legal status when he decided to take on the kidnapper and rescue the child. For the record, I pledge to help him in any way I can because he is such an inspiration to us all. Also for the record, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he made the right choice to rescue the child despite the fact that his rescue actually put him in danger because his legal status became known.

Quite a dilemma

Diaz Chacon does leave us with quite a dilemma, because we have very specific laws about our requirements for living legally in our country. Does his good deed, done selflessly, negate the laws of our country?

Also, he is being used by political figures all over the political landscape as the poster boy either for amnesty or enhanced enforcement of immigration laws. I am sorry that these people are so shallow as to use him for their own political agendas.

Oh, he does not have to worry very much about politicians calling for his deportation due to his lack of legal status. There is no one in Congress or the New Mexico government with the nerve to insist that the law of the land be followed. Is it good or bad that the law, which is very specific, cannot and/or will not be followed?

The problem is that our country is full of people who on the one hand proclaim that the United States of America is a nation of laws – it is one of the most said things about our country and in some people’s minds is what separates us from many other nations – but, as soon as some people proclaim that this is a nation of laws, then many of these same people say: But we only follow those laws we want to follow and we flaunt all other laws because we can. The founders of our country envisioned that we would follow the laws or change the laws, but we Americans would not flaunt the laws. That is what happens in most Third World countries.

So how should we proceed? We must always act with our laws in mind, regardless of how much we want to flaunt them. Diaz Chacon has to answer for being in our country without legal status. He must be treated as we treat all other people who want to be part of our great nation. We cannot bend our laws just because of a great Hollywood storyline.

Perhaps he can be pardoned by the president and put to work as an American, taking his place beside everyone else. I would be honored to stand up for him. But I also stand for the laws of our nation, because flaunting the law makes his rescue somehow less. The kidnapping of a child is against the law. The entry into our country is against the law. Change the law, but do not flaunt the exercise of the law.
