You've Never Seen a Robot Drive System Like This BeforeIEEE Student Branches Sections IEEE Projects 2011

What you're looking here is a hemispherical omnidirectional gimbaled wheel, or HOG wheel. It's nothing more than a black rubber hemisphere that rotates like a spinning top, with servos that can tilt it left and right and forwards and backwards. Powered by this simple drive system, the robot that it's attached to can scoot around the floor in ways that I would have to characterize as "alarmingly fast."

Before I go on about the design, have a look at just what this thing is capable of. Its creator, Curtis Boirum, a grad student at Bradley University, in Peoria, Ill., demoed it at the 2011 RoboGames symposium:

Just to reiterate, a HOG wheel is simply a rubber hemisphere that spins on its axis very, very fast. When the hemisphere is vertical, it's just like a spinning top, but by tilting the hemisphere so that one of its sides makes contact with the ground, you can vector torque in any direction near-instantaneously, depending on which side of the hemisphere you use.

So for example, if the hemisphere is spinning clockwise, tilting it so that the right side contacts the ground will "pull" the robot forward, with the amount of torque directly proportional to the tilt of the hemisphere, like an infinite gear ratio without any gears. It's very simple, very efficient, and as you can see from the video, the drive system is capable of delivering more torque than any of the poor robots that it's attached to can reliably handle.

This idea has actually been around for decades: a concept illustration of a car with a HOG drive graced the cover of the 1938 edition of Mechanics and Handicraft Magazine. Nothing much has really been done with it since, but Curtis (who actually re-invented the system from scratch) is hoping to create a cheap, powerful, and agile omnidirectional drive system that can be adapted for use by both researchers and hobbyists. We hope he'll build a car-sized version too.

CHENNAI: The modernisation work at the Chennai Corporation’s century-old slaughterhouse at Pulianthope is nearly over and the new facility would be inaugurated for business by the end of this month, said Mayor M Subramanian.

“Keeping public health and hygiene in mind, Chennai Corporation decided to improve the standard of the slaughterhouse and the work was awarded to a Delhi-based Hind Agro Industries in 2009,” Subramanian told reporters after inspecting the final works at the slaughterhouse.

Though attempts were made by the Chennai Corporation to rope in a contractor to take up the modernisation work for the past three decades, nothing materialised. At last, in 2009, the civic body identified the Hind Agro Industries for modernising the century-old abattoir, a prominent supplier of meat products for most parts of the city since 1903.

Hind Agro Industries began the project in September 2009 under Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) basis with a concession period of 22 years, including the construction period of 20 months. It may be noted that the project cost would be borne by the private developer.

Besides modernising the abattoir at a cost of Rs 48 crore, the operator (under the agreement) has to pay a concession fee of Rs 40 lakh per year till the facility was transferred to the Chennai Corporation after 20 years.

The buildings are designed and constructed according to the Tamil Nadu Industries Department norms for which, license also has been obtained from the Chief Inspector of Factories in May 2011.

The modern slaughterhouse, which has a capacity to slaughter 250 small animals and 60 large animals per hour, is designed as per the norms laid down by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and those practiced in the European Union and the USA.

Most part of the work has been completed. Once the final touches are given, the existing facility will be permanently shifted to the newly constructed additional facility

With this, the city's limits will extend from the present 174 sq km to 430 sq km and nine municipalities, eight town panchayats and 25 panchayats will be merged with the Chennai corporation. The move is expected to usher in better

Encroachments being removed in Pudupet on Tuesday.

The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday cleared encroachments in Pudupet with the assistance of the police, after it received complaints from road users.

The Corporation had to seek police assistance for removing the encroachments as a large number of shopkeepers had prevented its officials when they attempted to remove the encroachments on Monday.

The encroachments removed included portions of 100 shops on South Canal Bank Road on the banks of the Cooum River, an official of the Corporation said.

Most of the shops in the area were those of merchants of scrap collected from used vehicles.

The shops were parking old vehicles and dumping scrap on the road for the past 40 years, the official added.

A total of 44 loads of debris of demolished structures were removed using bulldozers on Tuesday.

As there was traffic congestion in the area because of the haphazard parking of vehicles in the area, the civic body had to intervene, the official added.

The traffic police have the responsibility of towing vehicles parked unauthorisedly on the road and they have been requested by the civic body to take action on such vehicles in the area. Unauthorised parking of vehicles on roads would be stopped in the area and traffic congestion is expected to ease in the area shortly, the official added.

Admission campaign in full swing

CHENNAI: Chennai Schools are on a drive to admit students. Since June 1, teachers of the schools have been going in pairs to neighbouring localities and explaining the benefits of studying in the institutions run by Chennai Corporation.

Apart from the free and quality education, the children also stood to benefit from the various schemes of the civic body for the students, the teachers explain to the parents.

Till Thursday, a total of 4,776 students had enrolled in Chennai Schools. The Corporation has a total of 281 schools. “The numbers [of new admissions] will go up on June 15 when the schools reopen. Our results have been encouraging this year,” said an official of the civic body.

More students are joining in class 1, 6, 9 and 11. In class 1, a total of 544 students have been admitted in Tamil medium and 140 in English and other medium sections. In class 6, since the opening of admissions, a total of 853 students had been admitted in Tamil medium and 263 in English and other medium sections.

Attractive incentives

For high and higher secondary students, the incentives like cash prizes and laptops are among the attractions. In class 9, a total of 771 students have joined in Tamil sections and in 211 in English sections.

“Many families are yet to return from vacation. We will be approaching more parents in a couple of days. Also students who cannot afford to pay private school fees would be coming to us. Only by this month end would we know the total number of admissions,” said a teacher of a Chennai School. www.job2freshers.com

The civic body runs a total of 32 higher secondary and 36 high schools. Many of these schools are sought after by parents and students due to their past performance. The demand for admission in some schools is high and parents also get recommendations letters from politicians and officials.

Mayor M.Subramanian said school admissions are going on well this year. “We will continue the schemes like free uniform and shoes that we had announced in the budget.”

Corporation Commissioner D.Karthikeyan said that every year during admissions, the teachers concentrate on school dropouts. “We pay more attention to the poor and downtrodden.”

New Delhi: He was the joint owner of a popular Chennai discotheque called HFO or Hell Freezes Over. That was before Dayanidhi Maran danced into national politics in 2004, the year when young India - most visibly represented by Rahul Gandhi - contested and won Lok Sabha seats in droves. It was the year of the babalogs and Maran was right there among the articulate, well-heeled, well-educated, young politicians armed with impressive degrees and impressive lineages.

It does not get more babalog than this. He is politician, journalist and scriptwriter Murosoli Maran's son, media baron Kalanidhi Maran's younger brother and, not the least, DMK patriarch K Karunanidhi's grandnephew.

The new MP from Central Chennai, then 37, was to the manor born. His father had been an MP for 36 years and a minister in three different governments at the Centre. His party, the DMK, was embarking upon yet another relationship with yet another government and Dayanidhi Maran was family - straight in line for a minister's post. Five days after the UPA government came to power, Maran was sworn in as Minister for Communications and Information Technology. Cabinet rank.
www.job2fresher.com
But then, when family can give, family can also take away. In May 2007, the DMK withdrew Maran from the Cabinet, after passing a resolution against him for "violating party discipline and tarnishing the party's image." The sub-text: An opinion poll published in the Dinakaran, a newspaper owned by Maran's brother Kalanidhi, said that Karunanidhi's younger son MK Stalin was more suited to succeed the father than older son MK Azhagiri or daughter Kanimozhi.

Protestors, alleged to be Azhagiri supporters, burnt down the Dinakaran office. Karunanidhi frowned and Maran lost his job. He quit the next day.

Four years later, Dayanidhi Maran has quit again. This time because he is under investigation for alleged misuse of office in 2006, when he was the Telecom Minister. But that is also the tenure that established Maran. He was the man who made talk cheap. And persuaded big companies to invest in Indian Telecom and IT. When he quit in 2007, Industry said it was disappointed.

Family disputes are wont to mend as time goes by. In late 2008, granduncle Karunanidhi granted his Maran grandnephews an audience and ended the feud. It, of course, was pertinent that Lok Sabha elections were months away and it was to the DMK's advantage to be united. In effect, when the UPA stormed back in the summer of 2009, and with the DMK too turning in a rich haul of seats, Dayanidhi Maran was in the good books and merited a ministry after securing his second Lok Sabha tenure. This time, though, he had to settle for the less glamourous Textile Ministry. A Raja who had stepped in as Telecom Minister after Maran's ignominious exit in 2007, bagged Telecom.

Born in December 1966, Dayanidhi Maran had the best of education in Chennai. He schooled at Don Bosco and got a BA degree in Economics from Loyola College. Maran is a well-known HAM or Amateur Radio Operator. His official website says he is sporty and plays golf, cricket and tennis. His brother, Kalanidhi Maran, figures in the Forbes list of richest Indians.
