Following is the timeline of the Ayodhya dispute:
1528: A mosque was built in Ayodhya in 1528. Hindu groups say Lord Rama was born and the Babri Masjid has been built after destroying a temple.
1853: In 1853, the first clashes at the site between Hindu and Muslim broke out.
1859: In 1859, the British administration put a fence to separate the places of worship for Muslims and Hindus.
1949: In December 1949, some Idols of Lord Ram were found inside the mosque. There were protests. Hindu and Muslims filed civil suits. The Government declared the premises a disputed area and locked the gates.
1984: In 1984, a panel was formed by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to build a Ram temple there.
1986: Hindus were allowed to worship there that caused the to Muslims form the Babri Mosque Action Committee.
1989: In 1989, VHP laid the foundations of a Ram temple on land adjacent to the mosque.
1990: The mosque was partially damaged by the VHP members. Prime minister Chandra Shekhar tried to resolve the dispute through negotiations with various groups but the talks were failed. The then BJP president Lal Krishna Advani took out a `rath yatra` to build the Ram temple.
1991: The BJP comes to power in Uttar Pradesh.
1992: On December 06, 1992, the supporters of VHP, the Shiv Sena and the BJP, demolished the mosque. It lead to a nationwide rioting between Hindus and Muslims. More than 2,000 people died in the riots. On December 16, The PV Narasimha Rao government at the Centre announces the setting up of the justice MS Liberhan commission to inquire into the conspiracy to demolish the Babri mosque.
1993: In March 1993, the Liberhan Commission began the probe.
1998: BJP formed coalition government under prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.
2001: Tensions rose on the anniversary of the demolition of the mosque. VHP pledges again to build Hindu temple at the site.
2002: In January Vajpayee set up an Ayodhya cell in his office and appoints a senior official, Shatrughna Singh, to hold talks with Hindu and Muslim leaders. In February of that year the BJP did not commit itself to a Ram temple in its manifesto for theUttar Pradesh elections.
2002: In February and March 2002, riots broke out in Gujarat claiming over 1,000 lives. Clashes broke out after a train coach carrying devotees returning from Ayodhya was burnt at Godhra station. 58 people were killed in the clashes. In April 2002, three High Court judges begin hearings on determining who owns the religious site.
Jan 2003: Archaeologists begin a court-ordered survey to find out whether a temple to Lord Rama existed on the site.
2003: Archaeologists say there is evidence of a temple beneath the mosque.
2003: In September, a court ruled that seven Hindu leaders should stand trial for inciting the destruction of the Babri Mosque, but no charges were brought against Advani.
2004: Congress-led United Progressive Alliance formed government. In November of the same year, a court in Uttar Pradesh ruled that an earlier order which exonerated Advani for his role in the destruction of the mosque should be reviewed.
2005: In July 2005, militants attack the site, using a jeep with explosives to blow a hole in the wall of the complex.
2007: The Supreme Court refuses to review a petition on the Ayodhya case being heard by courts in Lucknow and Rae Bareli.
2009: On June 30, the Liberhan Commission submited its report after more than 16 years.
2010: On September 08, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court said it will pronounce its judgment on case on September 24.
September 28, 2010: Supreme Court lifted the stay on Allahabad High Court`s verdict on the issue. High Court will give verdict on September 30.
