Could the Chicago Cubs be protecting a newly-renovated Wrigley Field as the defending World Series champions during the 2016 MLB All-Star game? If "Back to the Future II" has any credibility whatsoever, then it's not impossible
Forget about the 2016 Olympics. Could the Chicago Cubs be protecting a newly-renovated Wrigley Field as the defending World Series champions during the 2016 MLB All-Star game? If "Back to the Future II" has any credibility whatsoever, then it's not impossible.
Bud Selig is expected to announce the destination of the 2013 MLB All-Star game. That will be followed up with destinations for a handful of other Midsummer Classics. The Cubs were hoping to get the 2014 All-Star game as it celebrated the stadium's 100th anniversary. However, that doesn't appear possible as Wrigley Field isn't ready to handle the event in its current state.
The 2016 All-Star game is looking like more of a possibility as Wrigley Field renovation and construction around the surrounding areas is projected to take five years. Tom Ricketts must repair the interior and exterior of the park before MLB approves of them receiving the game. The Ricketts family is looking to install one-stop shops outside the stadium for entertainment, hotels and restaurants.
The idea of the All-Star game occurring on the 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field would have been pretty cool. However, I like the idea of it happening when the renovations are completed. That will be good for the businesses as they're trying to get on their feet. It'll also be an opportunity to showcase the renovations on national television.
Will the Cubs be competitive by then? That should be in the fifth year of any incoming general manager's term. Most of the bad contracts should be removed from the books by 2013 and probably all of them by 2016. Minor-leaguers like Javier Baez and Trevor Gretzky could be important players on the 25-man roster by that time.
This will be the Cubs' fourth All-Star game showing. Their last time hosting was in 1990. Considering that there are 30 teams, it's about time that MLB gets back around before 2020. Hopefully, the home-field advantage policies will be eliminated by then. If not, maybe the Cubs will be playing to host the World Series at Wrigley Field.
